We are running a trial with DefibDirect to allow us to put more AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) into the local (Thatcham and Newbury) area. We are asking for people to donate their old mobile phones, which for a certain number can be exchanged for an AED.
Trainees placing AED pads on a casualty and ensuring area is clear prior to delivering a shock.
Depending on the phones we get, we would like to put at least one in a Thatcham school and another in a Newbury shopping area. Obviously the more phones we get, the more devices we can put out into the public.
A Heart Attack is where the blood to the heart is restricted, so is a plumbing problem and one in which the casualty needs to get to hospital as quick as possible. Cardiac Arrest on the other hand is an electrical problem where the heart has stopped pumping blood around the body. There are different forms of Cardiac Arrest, but it is essential that CPR is started immediately. Without any intervention the chances of a casualty surviving a Cardiac Arrest decrease by approximately 10% for every minute that passes and thus why it is so vital that someone steps in and takes action. To increase the chance of a casualty surviving CPR needs to be started and to improve the chances further and an AED should, where possible, be used. The most common type of Cardiac Arrest is shockable, which means that an electric shock could potentially restart the heart. This is exactly what an AED does, they are simple and easy to use by anyone, no training is required, not only that they are smart in so much as they will not allow a shock to be delivered unless necessary.
So if you have an old phone you no longer want, please donate it to us, it may save a life!
If you have a phone to donate, first please ensure you have removed any sim and memory cards and have backed up any contents. Once they have been donated any sim and memory cards in them will be destroyed.
We will be adding to the list of collection points so please keep checking. We can come and collect (please contact us here) or you can drop of to us or one of our collection points.
