A young police officer saved the life of a runner at a race in Newbury earlier this year (2014). He along with other officers are climbing (16th Sept.) Pen Y Fan mountain in Wales to raise funds for us. This will allow us, when funds allow, to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which will be placed in a public location in Newbury Town Centre. In the event of a cardiac arrest the device can then be used increasing a casualties chance of survival to around 75%.

We have a number of schemes to get more Automated External Defibrillators (AED) into the community. Over the past few weeks, and months, we have had many questions asked about the devices and what can be done, and indeed what are we doing, to get more into local communities. So first, an AED is a defibrillator.

Tuesday 22nd July, 6.30pm-7.30pm at the Chequers Hotel, 8 Oxford Street, Newbury RG14 1JB This is an informal meeting, designed to introduce people to the British Heart Foundation. We will explain a little about local activities and where funds raised is spent in the local Newbury area. We would love to set up a new fundraising/supporter group in the Newbury area so we hope that by bringing together like-minded and interested supporters we can start one.

Disclaimer: We are not medical experts, what is written below are our opinions and understanding. It is STRONGLY recommended you seek advice from your Ambulance Service and/or other medical professionals. Disclaimer: NEVER perform CPR or use an AED on someone unless it is a medical emergency. We have been asked several questions over the last month or so, the bulk of which relate to Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED). So we have put the following together to try and answer some of those questions.

Heartstart Thatcham has been one of Thatcham Town Mayor’s, Mike Cole, charities for the past year (2013/14). The scheme teaches Emergency Life Support (ELS) skills to the public, for free. All of the members of the scheme offer their time and expertise for free giving training on the difference between Heart Attack and Cardiac Arrest, how to put someone in the recovery position and much more.
