Another Public Access Defibrillator has been installed by the Heartstart Thatcham team this one being placed at Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre. The device has been installed as a result of a partnership between Heartstart Thatcham, West Berkshire Council (Caroline Booth), Thatcham Town Council (Mel Alexander) and Greenham Common Trust.

The Heartstart Thatcham Defibrillator team installed a Public Access Defibrillator at Moorside Community Centre, Thatcham. The device has been installed as a result of a partnership between Heartstart Thatcham, West Berkshire Council, Thatcham Town Council, Greenham Common Trust and a few private individuals.

Heartstart Thatcham (team, family and friends) often take part in other charity events, an annual cancer coffee morning or dress in red for example. On 19th July the team (including family and friends) took part in Walk for Wards at Englfield to raise funds for the Royal Berkshire Charity (Royal Berks Hospital). A 10Km walk but to add to it the team carried an AED (defibrillator) all the way, carrying shared between the team.

Heartstart Thatcham has teamed up with Thatcham Park School and on 2nd July trained a number of year 5 pupils the full range of Emergency Life Support (ELS) skills. The course showed use of the recovery position, what a heart attack is, as well as CPR. Perhaps the most interest and fascination was in the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Nick said "we would like to see these skills as compulsory in all schools. Being able to be taught in as little as 3 hours is nothing considering they might one day save a life."

Heartstart Thatcham have been working with Kennet School and were recently able to donate to them a defibrillator. A defibrillator is a device that is used on a person who is in cardiac arrest. A cardiac arrest, which is different to a heart attack, is where the heart is no longer pumping blood around the body. This requires immediate CPR and where possible the use of a defibrillator; performing CPR and using a defibrillator together increase the chance of survival significantly.
